The new Swiss Federal Act on Medically Assisted Reproduction (LPMA) regulates the medical practices of the CPMA Lausanne. This law came into force on January 1st, 2001. The Swiss people voted in favour of a change to the LPMA, which came into force in September 2017.

Since then, the LPMA has particularly stated:

Medically assisted procreation is reserved for couples who appear to be able to bring up the child until the age of majority
Treatments are only allowed if there is no other way to solve the fertility problem or when the risk of transmitting a serious and incurable disease to the offspring cannot be ruled out in any other way
The legal duration of cryopreservation of sperm, oocytes, zygotes and embryos is 5 years. This period can be extended to a maximum of 10 years on specific request
Psychological counselling should be provided before, during and after the treatments
Unlike other treatments, couples wishing to benefit from a sperm donation must be married. A child conceived by sperm donation may have access, at the age of majority, to information concerning the identity of the donor and his physical appearance.

The legal framework
