Targeted (or “directed”) sexual intercourse (TSI) consists, by means of ultrasound and/or blood tests, in targeting the most fertile time of the female cycle. After these tests are carried out, the doctor will inform the couple of the most favourable period of the female cycle for sexual intercourse in view of becoming pregnant.

This treatment can be carried out if the following conditions are met:

At least one permeable fallopian tube
Presence of ovulation (with or without stimulation)
A uterus capable of receiving a pregnancy
Permeable cervical mucus
Possibility for sexual intercourse

Ovarian stimulation may be associated with directed sexual intercourse. It helps to overcome a hormonal problem and is intended either to restore ovulation or to increase the number of follicles reaching maturity. It also supports the preparation of the endometrium for embryo implantation.

The right time for sexual intercourse can be determined by several methods:

The dosage of hormones (E2, P, LH) in the blood
An ultrasound of the ovaries
Detection of an LH peak in urine
