Professor Marc Germond studied at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lausanne where he obtained his federal diploma in medicine in 1978. His postgraduate training was completed in surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology. In 1984 he specialized in reproductive medicine in the service of Professor C.D. Matthews' Fertility Unit, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woodville, Australia. In this program, he also became familiar with laboratory techniques used in medically assisted procreation (MAP). On his return to Lausanne, he used his knowledge to create an Infertility Unit in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Hospital (Prof. H. Bossart and P. De Grandi). He received his federal specialist title for gynecology and obstetrics in 1986, the year he was appointed Chief Resident. In 1987 he was appointed Associate Physician and took responsibility for the Infertility Unit. On the academic level, he was appointed Faculty Fellow in 1990, Privat-Docent in 1996 and Associate Professor in 2002. He led the Unit of Reproductive Medicine (UMR) CHUV and the Center for Medically Assisted Procreation (CPMA, in collaboration with the Clinic and the Cecil Group Hirslanden) until August 31, 2005. Since 1 September 2005, he directs exclusively the Center for Medically Assisted Procreation (in collaboration with the Clinic of the Cecil Group Hirslanden) in Lausanne.
Professor Marc Germond is president of the F.A.B.E.R. Foundation. His research interests relate to reproductive medicine, andrology, laparoscopic surgery, the use of lasers in assisted hatching of embryos, the importance of counselling and ethics in medically assisted procreation and the parental investment of the child born as a result of MAP. Professor Marc Germond has received several research grants from the National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) and other institutions and has contributed to the publication of over 100 articles in books and journals.
